Love Free From June 2024 Gluten-Free Subscription Box

Overview

As with my May 2024 review, this blog post is also up over a year later than I planned due to not having got around to upgrading my blog plan for a while. I have also had a lot going on in my personal life and my work life since then, but I will still publish the backlog of these blog posts as and when I can.

I have now cancelled any future Love Free From box subscriptions (my last box was the July 2025 one) due to wanting to make better lifestyle choices as per advice from my GP.

This month’s box was very special because it marked the 4-year anniversary of Love Free From. The box was lined with silver-coloured tissue paper and the leaflet included the following celebratory recipes:

*Easy Peasy Broccoli

*Chocolate Raspberry Yoghurt Bites

*Mermaid Lemonade

Here are the products I received in this month’s box:

Rheal Energy Superfood Oat Bar Banana Bread

After having received the Hazelnut Cacao bar in my April 2024 box, I was quite pleased to receive the banana bread version. It had a slight hint of banana with the walnut being somewhat more dominant. as with the Hazelnut Cacao bar, this one had a slightly chewy texture.

Rating: 7/10.

Love Corn BBQ

This is one product I received in my box that I have tried before. It is also my favourite flavour of Love Corn. Despite its faint washing up liquid/dish soap-like taste, it still has a great barbecue taste and I love the crunchy texture.

Rating: 8.5/10

Garafolo Gluten Free Linguine

This arrived in excellent timing because I received it at roughly the same time as my SimplyCook box that included a recipe kit for Louisiana Linguine. Although the linguine is hard to judge in terms of taste on its own, it stuck together at the bottom. The dish was also a bit spicier than I remembered. Despite these slight qualms, the linguine was a great ingredient for the dish.

Rating (as part of the Louisiana Linguine): 8/10.

Pri Bakes Oaty Pockets Hazelnut

These remind me of Kellogg’s Krave cereal although they are a bit bigger and have a hazelnut filling rather than a chocolate or chocolate-hazelnut filling.

By the time I had tried these, they were pretty much crumbled up due to having carried them to the 2024 Allergy & Free From Show (Pri Bakes were also at the show and I bought some more of the Hazelnut Oaty Pockets plus some of their other items). Although they were quite dry in texture, I liked the hazelnut filling.

The ones in the second packet I tried were neater than those in my first packet.

Rating: 8/10

Karma Drinks Organic Razza Raspberry Lemonade

Despite its name, this tasted more like regular lemonade than raspberry lemonade. It was still refreshing to drink on a very hot day.

Rating: 8/10

Just Live a Little Maple & Toasted Pecan Granola Sample Pack

I had already received a full-sized pack of this granola in my March 2024 box, so I decided to give the sample pack to my mother because she loves maple syrup and pecan nut combinations. She soaked it in soya milk for 30 minutes, which made it swell up and she also ate it with half a banana. My mother thought the granola was lovely and enjoyed it a bit more than I did.

I also tried soaking this granola from another full-sized pack in coconut milk for 30 minutes, although I felt that this didn’t make much difference to the size of the granola. I ate this serving of the granola with banana, coconut yoghurt and crunchy peanut butter.

My rating: 8/10. My mother’s rating: 10/10.

Zest Vegan Basil Pesto

I have tried other brands of vegan basil or green pesto, so I was content to receive this.

Appearance-wise, this pesto looked more freshly prepared than other brands.

While it had the standard green basil pesto taste, it was a bit salty.

I tried this pesto mixed with some tuna, sweetcorn and cucumber and used it as a filling for a Warburtons Gluten Free Soft Pitta Bread (I received these in my July 2024 box).

Rating: 8/10.

Schär Gluten-Free Marble Cake

Since going gluten-free in 2022, I have been loyal to Schär, especially with their sliced bread and their brown ciabatta rolls.

What I liked about this cake is that it was lactose-free as well as gluten-free. Although I avoid dairy where possible, I still eat lactose-free dairy products such as Cheddar cheese.

This marble cake had more of a vanilla flavour than a chocolate one. It still had a decent texture for a gluten-free cake.

Rating: 7/10

Caraboo Raspberry & Honeycomb Crunch

Seeing this bar gave me fond childhood memories of eating carob drops from Holland & Barrett (these no longer seem to be available).

While I liked the melt-in-the-mouth texture of this bar, it had a strange banana-like taste to begin with followed by the sweet raspberry taste and a sickly sweet artificial aftertaste. I couldn’t taste any honeycomb in this bar at all.

Rating: 7/10.

Just T Baby it’s cold outside Black Tea

This is the second time I received a teabag in a Love Free From box after having received the Joe’s Tea Co Ever-So-English Breakfast Tea in my May 2024 box

The name of the tea I received in this month’s box reminded me of the popular song Baby, It’s Cold Outside (the most well-known version of this song for me was by Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews – formerly the lead singer of Catatonia – from 1999). Ironically, I drank this tea on one of the hottest days of 2024.

While the key flavours of this tea are cloves, orange and cinnamon, the flavour that stood out the most was cinnamon. Despite this, I enjoyed this more than the Joe’s Tea Co Ever-So-English Breakfast Tea. I drank the Baby it’s cold outside tea with some coconut milk.

Rating: 8/10

iLove Snacks Baked & Smoked Almonds

Receiving these almonds made up for receiving the olives from the same brand in my April 2024 box. Although the almonds were a bit too salty, they also had a distinctive smoky taste.

Rating: 7/10

O3 Omega Omega 3 DHA + MCT Smoothie Not Peanut Butter & Jelly

This is by far the most disappointing and most misleading product I have received in a Love Free From box. The concept of this product sounded appealing at first. Upon opening it, it had a good nutty aroma. When I tried it, the disappointment kicked in because it had a bitter fish-like taste (despite the O3 Omega website saying that it didn’t contain any fish).

I added this supplement to some frozen banana, some fresh strawberries and some coconut milk to make a smoothie. While it no longer had the fishy taste, it still had the bitter taste. I even added some strawberry sauce to try to mask the bitter taste but to no avail.

Rating: 1/10 on its own, 3/10 when blended in the smoothie.

Cocoa Canopy Crafted Chocolate Drinking Beads Rich Dark

I enjoy drinking vegan hot chocolate, especially from Galaxy, so I was excited to receive this version.

In terms of preparation instructions, I had to boil some water, which was silly just for the purpose of melting the beads, heat some coconut milk and add it to the partially melted beads.

This version of vegan hot chocolate lived up to its name by having a rich taste. It also had an earthy aftertaste and I could still taste the coconut milk.

Rating: 8/10

Oggs Egg Alternative Aquafaba

I mixed this with some Tesco Free From Chocolate Brownie Mix and some melted Flora Plant Butter Unsalted. While the baked brownie mixture was gooey, it still fell apart a bit, so I rolled most of it into little balls.

Although I liked the texture of the brownie and the brownie balls, they tasted more like vanilla than chocolate. I couldn’t taste the aquafaba in the brownie; therefore, it was hard to judge on taste in its own terms.

Rating (when added to the brownie mix): 6.5/10

Itsu Crispy Seaweed Thins Sriracha

I donated these to a food donation point in a supermarket because I’m not overly keen on seaweed flavoured foods and I thought these would be too spicy for me.

I had also tried seaweed-flavoured snacks in my Degusta Boxes from February 2019 and May 2019. I disliked both of these snacks.

I also received a flyer for Cheese O’s Minis for some strange reason if I subscribed to the gluten-free and dairy-free boxes.

Final Verdict

When I first received this box, I was quite pleased with the selection of products. As I tried the products I decided to keep, most of them were above average. My favourite product was the Love Corn BBQ and my least favourite product was the O3 Omega Omega 3 DHA + MCT Smoothie Not Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Overall rating (including my mother’s rating for the Just Live a Little granola): 105/150

I have made an unboxing video of this box, but I am thinking of making a more polished version of it because I feel I had cut out more than I intended to in a program called Descript. I also made a mistake in the disclaimer at the beginning, so I will correct this mistake in the new version.
